Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed twice, moving from an original 2025 target to May 26, 2026, and then to Thursday, November 19, 2026 — the date Rockstar Games now says is locked in. It's a long wait for the most anticipated game of the decade, but the pattern is familiar: Rockstar has a history of pushing dates in the name of polish, and GTA 6 is following the same script as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 before it.

Here's how the timeline actually unfolded, what Rockstar said at each step, and why none of it should be a surprise to anyone who has followed the studio.

The original target: a 2025 launch that never got a date

When Rockstar unveiled GTA 6 with its first trailer in December 2023, the studio committed only to a broad 2025 window and never attached a specific day to it. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, repeatedly referenced a fiscal-year timeframe on earnings calls that pointed at a late-2025 launch. A firm calendar date was always missing.

Delay one: 2025 slips to May 26, 2026

In May 2025, Rockstar confirmed the first slip, setting GTA 6 for May 26, 2026, and — for the first time — giving fans a concrete date to circle. The studio paired the news with a short apology.

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

The trade-off came with an upside: on May 6, 2025, Rockstar released GTA 6 Trailer 2, confirming protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos and the Florida-inspired state of Leonida built around a modern Vice City. The trailer, captured in-game on PlayStation 5, drew hundreds of millions of views across platforms within its first day.

Delay two: May 2026 pushed to November 19, 2026

On November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced a second delay, moving the game roughly six months from its May date to November 19, 2026. The statement was brief and direct.

Hi everyone, Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.

The announcement landed alongside Take-Two's financial reporting. CEO Strauss Zelnick declined to detail the reasons for the push but backed the studio, saying the company remains both excited and confident they will deliver an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience. Rockstar itself framed the extra time strictly as a matter of finishing and polishing the game.

Why Rockstar delays: the GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 precedent

For a studio with Rockstar's track record, pushing a date to protect quality is the rule, not the exception. Two of its biggest games arrived late for the same reason:

  • Grand Theft Auto V was first announced for a spring 2013 release before slipping to September 17, 2013 — and went on to become one of the best-selling games of all time.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 moved from an original fall 2017 window to spring 2018 and finally to October 26, 2018, shipping as one of the most detailed open worlds ever built.

In both cases the extra months translated directly into critical and commercial success. Rockstar's own wording for the GTA 6 delay — extra time to reach the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve — is the same philosophy it has leaned on for more than a decade.

Is another delay coming?

Rockstar and Take-Two have publicly treated November 19, 2026, as final. Through 2026, Zelnick has repeatedly told analysts and press that the game remains on track for that date, and Take-Two has reaffirmed the release window while confirming that marketing would ramp up over the summer. Pre-orders opened in mid-2026, with the Standard Edition priced at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition at $99.99.

Nothing is guaranteed until a game is on shelves — but with the company staking its messaging on the November 19 date and marketing now in motion, a third delay would be a genuine break from the studio's current posture. For now, the wait ends on November 19, 2026.
